Abstract:

"A 5-part videotape featuring excerpts from the 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995 meetings with the former U.S. Secretaries of State, Defense and Treasury, World Leaders, and U.S. Ambassadors to the United Nations. To be used in conjunction with the Southern Center's 220-page Instruction Guide, 'East Asia in Transition.' Part 1, Lesson 1: East Asia : An Overview (white title page, approximately 8:41 min/sec) Historical and current news footage is used to outline the important traditions and contrasts in East Asia, followed by remarks from former Secretaries of State on recent economic development and opportunities in the region. Part 2, Lesson 2: Politics in East Asia (yellow title page, approximately 11:14 min/sec) Historical and current news footage is used to examine the development of democracy in East Asia, followed by former Secretaries of State who give their views on democracy in the region. Part 3, Lesson 3: The East Asian Economic Miracle (blue title page, approximately 13:45 min/sec) Historical and current news footage is used to outline the emergence of East Asia as an economically powerful region after World War II, followed by remarks by former Secretaries of the Treasury and former Secretaries of State on education, trade, and economic development in the region. Part 4, Lesson 4: Social Issues, Human Rights, and the Environment (red title page, approximately 21:47 min/sec) Historical and current news footage graphically depicts social and environmental conditions in East Asia, followed by former Ambassadors to the UN, former World Leaders, and former Secretaries of State discussing environmental and population issues, East Asian culture, and human rights in the region. Part 5, Lesson 5: U.S. Interests (green title page, approximately 18:15 min/sec) Historical and current news footage is used to outline U.S. interests in East Asia, followed by former Secretaries of Defense and former Secretaries of State discussing U.S. relations with China, the Koreas, Japan and Indonesia."
