What Is the Media Search Tool?
The Media Search Tool is a reference database, listing several thousand Asia-related audiovisual materials. It is NOT an e-commerce site. Except for a very small number of video programs (click here for more info), AEMS does not distribute the titles listed.

Every title is linked to information about its retail distributor. Please contact the distributor directly with questions about purchase, rental, shipping, etc. Occassionally, distributors go out of business or change locations. Please let us know if you are unable to contact the distributor listed. We will update the database accordingly and do our best to let you know where you can find the item you are looking for.

How do I use the Media Search Tool?
You can search the database by region/country, subject, media type, and audience. You can search by one or more of these categories by selecting terms from the pop-up menus. The default selection for each category is "All." This means that if you do not select a term from a pop-up menu, you will search for items matching all the terms provided for that category. Items are catalogued and retrievable by region and country. A search for "East Asia," for example, will bring up items on that region as a whole or part as well as items about specific countries of that region including China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao.

Can I search by title?
You can search by title by typing one or all words in a title. The database interprets these words with inherent truncation. This means that if you type "Japan," instances of "Japanese" will be retrieved as well as those of "Japan." Although it is AEMS' general policy to follow the style guidelines of the Journal of Asian Studies in matters of spelling and punctuation, we defer to the authors' preferences when it comes to titles. Thus, "Vietnam" and "Viet Nam" entered into the title search will call up different items.

Once I get my search results, what do I do?
From the initial search results, you may browse by general subjects and subtopics. Items will be listed alphabetically by title. You may wish to look at the subject terms used in the database.

How do I find a review of an item?
Any item that has been reviewed will have a small icon next to its title. Click on the icon to read the review.

How can I add my own review?
Email us at aems@uiuc.edu.

Why are some titles listed more than once?
If a title is listed more than once, it is probably:
  • part of a series, or
  • one of two or more different items that have the same title. It's rare, but it happens.
A Final Word:
