Abstract:

In this programme, we discover how sustainable energy needn't hamper economic development - by looking at examples of cleaner energy solutions that are doing the business for planet and pocket.
Electricity from water and sun across rural Sri Lanka has uses ranging from powering a hairdressing salon to stopping marauding elephants from wrecking crops. Pedal power is freeing North Indian farmers from expensive and polluting diesel irrigation pumps, and boosting incomes. In Tanzania, brick factories are threatening forests as wood is needed for the firing process, now a new design of kiln is burning agricultural waste - providing materials for permanent homes without causing deforestation. In Bangladesh, microcredit is allowing small businesses to flourish around solar electricity systems, making them more productive.
