Abstract:

For a genre that rarely makes an impact at the box office - at least when it comes to domestic products - the Korean animation industry offers a pretty impressive variety of styles, genres, and formats.

All of the following shorts in Korean Short Film Animation Collection Vol. 2 feature an interview with the director along with an introduction of the short film:

  • "Jungle" (2001, 35mm, Color, 4:50, 2D)
Through a series of vignettes from young boy X's day, the short takes a look at modern society's violence, both physical and psychological.

  • "Child in a Box" (2002, DV 6mm, Color, 6:14, 2D)
Left inside a box all day, a child's only friend is his little toy plane. All alone, the child lets his imagination fly, creating interesting new situations that allow him to meet even more friends.

  • "Venice Beach" (2003, 35mm, Color, 4:35, stop-motion/3D)
Two crabs are exercising in a gym when suddenly a strange looking crab approaches them. Something they have never experienced before is about to happen.

  • "A Cat and I" (2004, beta, Color, 7:20, Cutout)
On a rainy day, a child finds an abandoned cat. After bringing the cat home, the child falls asleep. When he wakes up, he finds his parents fighting and the cat nowhere to be found. As the noise increases, the child finds the cat and the two start daydreaming together.

  • "I Want to Invite You" (2003, beta, Color, 9:00, 2D)
A woman is widowed soon after her marriage. On the day of the funeral, the driver wears flashy pink clothes. The widow's sister has been spending the entire day alone when she hears someone knocking at the door...

  • "Ssong's Holiday" (2004, Digi-Beta, Color, 8:50, 2D)
The holidays are around the corner, and little Ssong is trying to help at home. Problem is she makes mistakes left and right, enough that her mother scolds her. Her father takes her side, and soon the parents are fighting.

  • "Gender Equality" (2004, DV 6 mm, Color, 2:17, 2D/3D)
A woman inside a pictogram in the restroom makes an alter ego of herself and joins every pictogram in the emergency exit, the elevator, and more, sharing the space with other men.

  • "Nest" (2005, Digi-Beta, Color, 8:40, 2D)
Thanks to a wedding, life at a small village has become a collage of beautiful sights and celebrations, just like a festival. But things at night change in this little village, along with our two young protagonists.

  • "Wolf Daddy" (2005, Beta, Color, 10:00, 2D)
To write his best novel yet, a wolf novelist moves to a quiet village in the countryside. One rainy day a woman brings a six-year-old girl, saying she's the wolf's daughter. The wolf is shocked, especially when the woman just leaves the girl with him. What will be more important, raising the child or writing a great novel?

  • "Herstory" (2005, Digi-Beta, Color, 5:57, Stop-Motion Puppet)
In a dark room, a woman is making a statue of herself. Suddenly she throws out the sculpture and sits down on that chair.
