Abstract:

This film explores the changing ancient traditions of the Hani ethnic group in the context of a market economy. According to Hani tradition, boys and girls are free to have different sex partners as long as they remain unmarried. But it is absolutely forbidden to get close to any married woman, and those who break this taboo may be beaten to death by other villagers. After working as a cook in the city and losing his partner there, one man from this group returns home only to find he is out of favor because he has no money. He resumes his relationhip with a former lover, who is unhappy in her marriage, and decides to risk his life to preserve his own "paradise".
