Abstract:

Satomi Tamura shares a day in her life in historic Kyoto, Japan. We see the value Japanese place on education as we follow Satomi to her classes, and into her home to meet her family and friends. We see the role of tradition in flower arrangement and origami. Part two tells of Sok Thea, a Cambodian boy who lost his leg to a land mine while tending cows. We follow him as he struggles to use his new prosthesis, getting a rare view into rural Cambodian life." "JAPAN: A bright and conscientious student, Satomi Tamura, thirteen-years-old, shares her life in historic Kyoto, Japan. She highlights the value her country places on education. We tour her school visiting English and calligraphy classes. Satomi visits a shrine with her family and shows us how important family life is in her culture. First 14 minutes." CAMBODIA: Sok Thea, a thirteen-year-old Cambodian boy, lost his leg to a land mine as he tended his family's cows in a village meadow sixty miles north of Phnom Penh. Sok Thea struggles with his prosthesis as he goes to school and tries to live a normal life. Sok Thea is among tens of thousands maimed or killed in the aftermath of Cambodia's genocidal civil war. Second 14 minutes." "A young Cambodian girl and a Japanese boy share personal stories about their lives in their native homelands. Presented separately, both profiles provide insight into family, education, everyday life, and social conditions in Japan and Cambodia."
