Abstract:

On May 14, 1948, the Jewish leader David Ben-Gurion declared Israel's independence. The very next day, the new nation, carved out of Palestine, was attacked by its Arab neighbors. In the 50 years since Israel's birth, it has become a strong and prosperous nation.
