Abstract:

This compelling overview intertwines Tibet's modern history with the life story of the country's spiritual and political leader. Alternating between vintage news footage and perceptive commentary by scholars, the program helps viewers witness and understand: the boy monk's traditional Tibetan education; how China's invasion and occupation changed Tibet; the teenaged leader's naive attempts to negotiate with the Chinese; his formation of a government in exile; and his tireless campaign to focus international efforts in support of the Tibetan people.
