Abstract:

"Unofficial organizations, such as guilds and temple organizations of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), are discussed in relationship to their impact on the official organization of the State. Students will learn about the traditional and modern forms of community and grassroots organizations and the importance of the work unit in Chinese society. The function and structure of urban China's neighborhood communities are also examined to show their impact on Chinese culture and family."
