Abstract:

"Cooperation is a virtue taught and structured in the Japanese educational system and is a theme emphasized in many Japanese children's books. Oyoge Ooki na Koinobori (Fly, Big Carp Streamer) is one such book. The book not only teaches children about the importance of cooperation, but also illustrates the Japanese tradition of flying carp streamers on Children's Day, May 5th. In Lesson One, students will listen to the story in Japanese while viewing slides of the book. In Lesson Two, students will cooperatively make a class carp streamer for display in their school or classroom. In Lesson Three, students will look at several slides taken of a Japanese school's annual sports festival, and they will be asked to comment on the importance of cooperation during such sports festivals. Objectives: *to improve listening comprehension and oral language development; * to improve inference skills; * to develop artistic skills; * to practice writing skills; * to practice working in small groups" --http://spice.stanford.edu || Table of Contents available at http://iis-db.stanford.edu/pubs/10032/Cooperation_in_Japan_.pdf
