Abstract:

From Hideji Hojo's adaptation of the novel Musashi, by Eiji Yoshikawa. "The great Toshiro Mifune portrays Musashi Miyamoto, the most famed of all Japan's swordsmen, whose life begins as a farmer in a 17th Century village. During a civil war, he goes off in search of glory, only to suffer defeat on the wrong side. He returns as an outlaw, half-mad and uncontrollable, and is saved only by the intervention of a village girl who loves him and a Buddhist priest who tries to heal him. Samurai I is one of the most popular martial arts films ever made, with its rich visualization and compelling story. Toshiro Mifune's portrayal of Miyamoto is one of his most moving performances and rivals his work in the Seven Samurai."-- VHS Container.
