Abstract:

Traces the history of Korean emigration to North America, showing the unique traditions they brought with them, and who they are today. Discusses when and why they emigrated, where they settled, which occupations they engaged in, and who the important leaders are within their community. Viewers take a special look inside the life of a Korean family, meeting three generations of family members who share memories of Korea and their motivations for journeying to North America. Younger family members explore the importance of cultural identity, how it is maintained and how it changes. In interviews, leading historians examine the impact of the Korean people on the growth of the U.S. and Canada and the contributions made by Korean individuals. Adapted from the "Peoples of North America" series of books by Chelsea House Publishers. --Paraphrased from VHS container || "Technically excellent, these videos are smoothly edited to combine a nice mix of historical stills and film footage...This excellent series will be of general interest, as well as an effective teaching tool for multicultural studies, contemporary issues, and American history." -- School Library Journal || For Grades 4-10
